SummerWood From Past to Present

SummerWood is a thriving community in Sherwood Park, just east of Edmonton. This past year, it was a finalist for Best Community at the 2023 CHBA Edmonton Region Awards of Excellence.

This nearly completed community has a terrific location, beautiful scenery, and an impressive array of outdoor amenities. Let’s rewind for a moment to appreciate the evolution of SummerWood over the last two decades.

Planning and Preservation

In early 2002, Qualico held a public meeting to propose the development of a 330-acre parcel of land in Sherwood Park. The SummerWood Area Structure Plan was approved on April 9, 2002, and construction began in 2003. A total of 2,283 homes were anticipated, with 150 in the first Phase.

One of the key objectives in the original SummerWood proposal was “to integrate selected natural areas into the fabric of the neighbourhood to create a balance between the natural and built environment.” The first step in honouring this commitment was the preservation of a tree stand in Sunfield Park, providing the community with an urban forest and inviting walking trails. Another early installation was a storm water pond, incorporated into the channel of a natural creek that runs through the land.

Adding Outdoor Amenities

As the community grew, inviting outdoor spaces were developed to appeal to families setting down roots in Sherwood Park. Paved multi-use trails connect SummerWood’s various amenities and are ideal for walking, running, cycling, or transporting little ones in a stroller or wagon.

SummerWood’s play areas were carefully designed and implemented in the following sequence:

  • 2004 – The community’s first park and playground were added on Summercourt Way.
  • 2005 – The installation of a larger park and playground further enhanced the green space on Summerton Crescent. This area is also home to the Summerton Spray Deck splash pad.
  • 2006 – A park and playground area were incorporated into Phase 5, on Suncrest Way.
  • 2007 – A playground was added on Summerland Drive near the Sunfield Park urban forest.
  • 2015 – A playground with multiple structures, plus surrounding green space, was opened on Stoneridge Drive.
  • 2022 – A new, modern style playground was created at the corner of Signet Road and Savoy Crescent.
  • 2023 – New outdoor amenities were established on Sandstone Boulevard, including a community garden , basketball court and skating surfaces for the winter.

Appreciating SummerWood Today

The community currently has just under 2,000 homeowners, with an anticipated 250 more coming over the next two to three years. Desirable lots are still available, including the community’s final Phase.

SummerWood has a variety of distinctive Home Styles to choose from, in partnership with five reputable home builders. This year, StreetSide Developments added a new Home Style called a Lifestyle Bungalow, intended for people who are looking to downsize while retaining the amenities of a Single Family Home.

The location is excellent for commuters, with easy access to Yellowhead Trail and Highway 21. Commercial amenities have steadily risen up around the community, with options for shopping, dining and entertainment conveniently located at Emerald Hills Centre and Sherwood Park Mall.

We’ve been developing SummerWood for the last 21 years, and we know we’ve created something special. We’re proud to have built this community, and we invite you to take a closer look.
